In Spain, opera dates back to the 17th century and although historically there has always been more of a theatrical tradition, opera has also taken root. Here, these two disciplines combined to create the zarzuela, a genre of its own that has filled a number of theatres that are well worth a visit.

Teatro de la Maestranza, Seville
More than 150 operas are set in Seville; however, the city did not have an auditorium to host them until 1991. This was when Teatro de la Maestranza was opened, with a dome measuring almost 50 metres and a capacity for 1,800 attendees. This venue hosts a variety of high-quality shows, thanks to the space's variable acoustics. An incredible experience.

Gran Liceu Theatre, Barcelona
Opened in 1847 and located right on the Ramblas, this is one of the symbols of the city of Barcelona, the oldest active theatre in the city and a perfect place to enjoy the opera. This space also boasts the honour of having the oldest symphony orchestra playing in Spain, dating back 170 years, which has been conducted by some of the best conductors in the world.

Teatro Real, Madrid
With a surface area spanning 65,000 square metres and a capacity for 1,746 spectators, the Teatro Real is the country's leading national opera house and one of the star spaces of Spanish culture. Here, attendees can enjoy avant-garde works as well as great classics, in a building opened in 1850, opposite the Royal Palace
