The Roman past of Tarraco
The exhibited pieces illustrate the process of Romanization of the Iberian Peninsula.
This museum, founded in the 19th century, is the oldest in Catalonia dedicated to this field. Most of its collections have been recovered over the past 150 years, following digs undertaken at the nearby Paleochristian Necropolis. The material on display here highlights the historical and monumental importance of the Roman city of Tarraco. Its halls feature displays containing various remains of sculptures, mosaics, architecture, ceramics, domestic and military utensils, amphorae, clothing, funerary objects, coins... Many of these items can be traced to important monumental buildings in the city such as the theatre, the circus, the amphitheatre or the forum.Head office temporarily closed for renovations. While they remain ongoing, you can visit the “TARRACO/MNAT” summary exhibition at the Tinglado 4 branch in the Port of Tarragona.
