Caesaraugusta Theatre Museum

Zaragoza

In 2003, a museum was opened that reviews the history and importance of one of the best-preserved monuments in the city of Zaragoza.

The Roman Theatre, rediscovered in 1972, was probably built in the 1st century. It fell into decline in the 3rd century, when its stone was used for walls and other buildings and its structure ended up covered and forgotten under new housing. The museum can be found in Casa de Gabriel Zaporta, which was built around the 16th century. On the ground floor, visitors will enjoy the panoramic views that portray how the theatre's plot changed over time, as well as a summary of the archaeological excavation work.In the basement, visitors can see an audiovisual projection, models, set designs and a three-dimensional recreation of the theatre. The visit includes access to the monument itself up to the pulpitum or wooden stage. Finally, on the first floor, the museum, using audiovisual media, offers an approach to Roman theatre, its genres, its authors... In addition, to learn about aspects of the different cultures that occupied the theatre grounds, various domestic environments from the Muslim, Jewish and Christian periods have been recreated.
