The museum was opened in 1976 and is located in the former convent of Santo Domingo de Bonaval.

The pieces on display help to understand the different aspects that define Galician culture. It has different rooms dedicated to aspects such as the sea, trades, the countryside, built space, traditional Galician society and daily life, as well as sections on clothing and music.
