Mosque of Cristo de la Luz

Toledo

The rescued Christ.

It dates from the year 999 and remains intact to this day. Legend has it that King Alfonso VI discovered, hidden behind a wall to prevent it from being desecrated, a Christ illuminated by an oil lamp.

It has a square floor plan, and its brick façade is decorated with arches reminiscent of the Great Mosque in Córdoba. Inside, the horseshoe arches support nine vaults, their layout being different in the different sections of the nave. When it was consecrated to Christian worship, the transept and a Mudejar-style apse decorated with blind arches were added.
