La Encartada Beret Factory

Balmaseda

Bizkaia

The beret factory of La Encartada was founded in 1892 by the Marcos Arena, an “indiano” (the name given to prosperous Spaniards returning from the Americas), in collaboration with an English textile firm. The museum is formed by several buildings: the factory, the workers’ quarters, a shrine, and the house of the overseer. The interior conserves extremely valuable machinery mostly dating from the 19th century.
