El Garraf Park

none

The protected natural area of the Garraf Massif is an exotic landscape, dominated by caves, chasms and unique vegetation.

Found in the province of Barcelona, between the regions of Baix Llobregat, Alt Penedès and Garraf, its arid landscape with rounded peaks, steep slopes and deep valleys, makes it one of the most important natural reserves of Catalonia. One of the unmissable stops is its highest point, La Morella, which offers incredible panoramic views from its 594-metre height. The park is also a benchmark in caving activities. Some of its most impressive spots include the l'Esquerrà chasm, the deepest reaching a depth of 336 metres.Due to the arid climate, the area's plant life is dominated by the dwarf fan palm, while in terms of wildlife, the most prominent are the Bonelli’s eagle and Mediterranean tortoise. The different paths and trails allow visitors to explore every single corner of the park and discover its heritage of old farmhouses and other buildings, such as the vine huts, small huts built using the dry stone technique, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

What you need to know

  • Cultural information

Inside the park you can discover everything from prehistoric caves to castles, medieval fortifications and modernist buildings. However, if there is one element that stands out in El Garraf, it is the architecture of the farmhouse related to the cultivation of vines and livestock. Take the opportunity to visit the Eramprunyà Castle and the Plana Novella palace complex. And, of course, the Black Cave, an adventure to admire the underground beauty.

  • Environmental information

The particular environmental conditions of this territory have given rise to a truly unique flora and fauna. Here, dense scrub is king. As far as wildlife is concerned, the park is a paradise for bird lovers. Most prominent are the Bonelli's eagles, black wheatears, black-eared wheatears and blue rock thrushes. The cave fauna is also a jewel to be discovered, with species such as bats, badgers and martens.

  • Information for visits

There is a series of signposted botanical, sensory and artistic itineraries. Some of them are accessible to people with mobility or visual impairments.
