Aigüamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park

Girona

Mediterranean wetland

The park is a diverse set of ecosystems that provide refuge for many animal species, especially birds.

The park includes three integral reserve areas: Les Llaunes, Els Estanys and Illa of Caramany. It is located in the Alt Empordà region, in the Bay of Roses, between the mouths of the Muga and Fluvià rivers. Among the vegetation, wild species blend with cultivated plants. Thus, we find rice fields and pasture areas, along with reed beds, bulrushes and meadows with yellow irises. As for birds, more than 320 different species have been inventoried, including the mallard, little bittern, bittern, stork, purple gallinule and marsh harrier. The park also serves as a wintering site for thousands of cattle egrets, mallards, lapwings, and more. The otter and the polecat are the largest native mammals found here, while among the fish species, carp, eel and mullet are the most notable. The Spanish toothcarp and the stickleback are notable species for their rarity.
