Manzanares El Real Castle (Region of Madrid)

Manzanares El Real

Madrid

A place to enjoy nature, history and outdoor sports, less than 60 kilometres from Madrid. Manzanares el Real is located in the Sierra of Madrid, in the Cuenca Alta del Manzanares Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1993.

From the town you reach La Pedriza, an area that stands out for its environmental value and the whimsical shapes of its granite peaks. Steeped in legend, it was a frequent hideout for bandits in the second half of the 19th century. It is also an exceptional spot for rock climbing.

Another highlight of this town is its historical and cultural heritage, particularly the 15th-century castle of Manzanares el Real, one of the best preserved fortresses in Madrid. The Ethnological Museum houses archaeological remains found in the municipality, as well as a reconstruction of a traditional home. You can also enjoy fishing in the Santillana Reservoir, exploring the natural surroundings on foot, horseback, or by bike, or sampling traditional Castilian cuisine.
