The Prado Museum is hosting the first solo exhibition in Madrid by the German Sigmar Polke, a leading figure in postmodernism who died in 2010. The more than 40 pieces, including paintings, photographs and drawings, by one of the most influential artists of contemporary European art, engage in dialogue with the Spanish pictorial tradition and, in particular, with the genius Francisco de Goya. Both authors are separated by two centuries, the 18th and 19th, but united by a disruptive vision of the world.
When Polke was able to analyse Goya's Old Women or Time (1810-12) in 1982 (going so far as using X-rays), everything changed for the German: he was profoundly influenced both in the way he composed his creations and in his techniques. The long-distance relationship between the two masters and their perspective on universal themes are the focus of this exhibition, which is not organised chronologically but rather through concepts over time.
