Garden of the Marquise of Arucas in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

Jardín de la Marquesa

Gran Canaria

Very close to the city of Arucas, north of Gran Canaria, the first Marquis of Arucas, Don Ramón Madan y Uriondo and his wife Doña María del Rosario González y Fernández del Campo, ordered the creation of a spacious romantic garden known as Jardín de la Marquesa around 1880. The location they chose could not have been more suitable, since the protection of the Arucas mountain and the proximity to the coast create a benevolent microclimate that allows the wild growth of the more than 2,500 plants belonging to some 400 tropical and subtropical species currently existing in the garden. The Marquis, a passionate botany enthusiast, managed to bring together flora from all five continents in this five-hectare, irregularly-designed garden, which features notable tree specimens such as the superb dragon tree, the garden's most emblematic tree, which is estimated to be between 400 and 500 years old.
