House of Hippolytus. Complutum archaeological site

House of Hippolytus. Complutum archaeological site

Madrid

The Roman city on which the town of Alcalá de Henares originally stood was called Complutum. In the area nearby stands the House of Hippolytus, which formed part of a large estate and is one of the few known Young Men's Colleges in Hispania.

It was built between the third and fourth centuries A.D. and was surrounded by spacious gardens and a mausoleum dedicated to the memory of the Anios family. This monument was also the site of a Young Men's College for the urban nobility. Inside visitors can see a beautifully conserved mosaic depicting a scene of fish created by the schoolmaster Hippolytus.
