Fuentemolinos Cave in Puras de Villafranca
Belorado
It is undoubtedly one of the greatest speleological treasures to be found in the province of Burgos. Its unique characteristics make it a geological rarity and the sixth largest cave of its kind in the world.
The Fuentemolinos cave is truly remarkable because it is more than four kilometres long, running along a mass of calcareous conglomerate dating back to the Oligocene, some 35 million years ago. This makes it a geological rarity, as this type of rock is not usually conducive to cave formation, and even less so when they are this long. In addition, the cave interior offers a wonderful profusion of formations (gours, eccentric forms, stalactites, stalagmites and columns) on its floors, ceilings and walls. Access to the cave is located on a hillside 500 metres from the village of Puras de Villafranca. The cave features three superimposed floors: The lower level is a canyon through which an underground river flows outwards, while the two upper floors contain the most beautiful and unique elements.
