Barcelona Botanical Garden

Barcelona

In 1999, construction of a new Botanical Garden on Montjuïc hill was completed, a second one for the city of Barcelona (in addition to the Botanical-Historical Garden). It received a European Union Cohesion Fund grant. This new garden complements the first, focusing more on medicinal plants and vegetables, based on unusual, novel criteria: plants are selected and grouped according to criteria of “Mediterranean-ness”. This means that the garden is structured over 14 hectares with 2,000 species from the world’s five regions with Mediterranean climate: the Mediterranean basin, western California, Central Chile and the southernmost areas of South Africa and Australia.
