Pilancones Natural Park, Canary Islands

Pilancones Natural Park

Gran Canaria

The oldest landscape

A succession of small plateaus, crisscrossed by ravines, create one of the most beautiful landscapes in the oldest part of the island.

The park borders the Nublo Rural Park to the north and the Fataga Protected Landscape to the east. In the highest area are the Inagua, Ojeda and Pajonales Pine Forests. Its morphology is structured by a succession of medium and low altitude zones, crisscrossed by the channels of several ravines that form a landscape of great beauty. It is one of the oldest areas on the island, with materials dating back more than 12 million years. This area has been classified as a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA). From a botanical inventory standpoint, it is worth mentioning the “Tabaibal-Cardonal” vegetation areas in the lower zone and pine and rockroses in the middle and upper sections. Among the trees, the Pilancones Pine Forest stands out, which is one of the largest on the island. Isolated dragon trees and junipers can also be seen. Among the fauna, there are numerous bird colonies, the most notable species of which are the blue finch, the great spotted woodpecker and the trumpeter bullfinch.
