Ávila Mediaeval Festival

Festivity of National Tourist Interest
Ávila

The old quarter of Ávila with its famous walls, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, plays host to the Mediaeval Festival (or “Market of the Three Cultures”) every first weekend in September, offering a veritable journey into the past.

Dozens of local and international craftsmen, musicians and minstrels, falconers and archers, knights who joust on foot with swords and on horseback in tournaments, decorated balconies and shop windows, street theatre and entertainment... And, as goes without saying, all against the backdrop of the great walls, decorated in the style of the period along their entire 2.5 km perimeter, including 88 fortified towers. All of this is on offer as part of the occasion that is celebrated each year.Dubbed the “Market of the Three Cultures”, its aim is to recall the peaceful coexistence in Ávila of Christians, Muslims and Jews. The city's residents are encouraged to mark the occasion by dressing in the mediaeval style and depicting the culture of their choice.
